How to Use Food Photos Effectively

Ask a PR professional and they’ll tell you: Images are a powerful marketing tool no matter what industry you belong to. For restaurants, images of the food they serve are everything. After all, we eat with our eyes, don’t we? As such, these photos should elicit the kind of emotional reaction that compels people to rush to your establishment and order the dishes that caught their attention.

PR agencies know only too well the power of capturing the right kind of food imagery. With that said, here are a few other things to consider, to whet the appetites of prospective diners and have them all lining up at your restaurant.

‘Smile! You’re on candid camera’

Be sure to capture the ‘candidness’ of the dish. Make the viewer believe that the dish is mere inches away and ready to be savoured.

Light and shade

Lighting is key to a good food photo, and direct light is always best. Low lighting only makes food less appealing. Make sure your food is bathed in light to showcase the colours and textures of the dish effectively.

Action and reaction

Make every picture come alive by putting a person in it. Someone grabbing, cooking or dipping the food is sure to grab people’s attention. Images solely of the food are also a great way to wet the viewer’s tastebuds.
